DPM 2010: Use unauthenticated SMTP server

One of our Belgian ISP providers, Telenet, allows us to send mails using an unauthenticated SMTP server (when connected to the Telenet network).

The steps below explain how you can use an unauthenticated SMTP server to send DPM notifications.

In the DPM Administrator Console go to the Administration tab > Options > SMTP Server

Configure the SMTP server settings.

  • SMTP server name: in this case smtp.telenet.be
  • SMTP Server Port: 25
  • From Address: The address of which mails are sent.

When trying to send a Test E-mail without filling in a Username or Password, you receive the following error:

ID: 2013
Details: Logon Failure: unknown user name or bad password.

Fill in a username and password of an account with administrative rights on the DPM server. (or enter a blank space in the username field)

Try sending a Test E-mail again.

After filling in a correct email address you receive the following message:

An e-mail message has been successfully sent

Check your inbox!

You should have received the test email!

A few days after posting this,  Microsoft released a KB related to this issue  http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2020373
