DPM2010: Volume missing (3101)

Last week I changed the Protection group for the file shares at a customer site.
I removed the DFS root share, and added each share in the DFS root server seperatly. When removing the DFS share I choose to retain all data.

So I changed the protection group from:

  • DFS (protected)
  • Share 1
  • Share 2

To

  • DFS
  • Share 1 (Protected)
  • Share 2 (Protected)

The retention range for this backup was 1 week. Today, exactly one week later I received this error on the newly added shares: Volume missing (3101).

Alert: DPM2010: Volume missing (3101)
Alert description:
Recovery data for E:\ on <server> in protection group <name> resides on a volume that cannot be detected. All subsequent protection activities relating to E:\ will fail until this volume is brought back online or the replica is re-created. (ID: 3101)

The DPM alert suggested to stop protection of all the shares and delete the data.
I most surely wasn't going to do that without troubleshooting this issue, file share backup is very important for this customer.

So, I opened explorer and browsed to the recovery point volume without a problem.
In disk manager all volumes were online. Only DPM was having issues with the volume.

I rescanned the disks and modified the protection group and went through the wizard without modifying anything.
And that did the job. Created a few manual recovery point without issues.

I'm guessing DPM got confused by removing the retained volumes because the data on it was expired.
